ONE NEW LISTING HAS BEEN POSTED! .....AND
FOLLOWING IS A COMPOSITE NEWSLETTER OF TWO RECENT ONES THAT WERE MAILED TO MY LIST OF WHITBY 42'S, BREWER 12.8'S AND BREWER 44 OWNERS. I AM MISSING ABOUT 100 BOAT OWNERS IN ALL, MOSTLY THE EARLY BUILT ONES AND A NUMBER OF THE FORT MYERS PRODUCTION. ANYONE WISHING TO BE INCLUDED CAN LET ME KNOW THROUGH ANY OF THE CONTACT METHODS NOTED ON THIS SITE.

THE INFORMATION SHARED THROUGH THIS MEDIUM IS MOSTLY LEARNED VICARIOUSLY THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE OF MANY OWNERS SPREAD AROUND THE WORLD AND IS INTENDED TO BE HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE AS A RESOLVE THAT MAY PREVENT RE-OCCURRENCE OF SIMILAR OR LIKE PROBLEMS AND/OR TIME CONSUMING SOURCING TO IMPROVE AN AREA OF THESE GREAT YACHTS. THE AUTHOR SAILS A WHITBY 42 IN PARTICULAR AND SHARES A GREAT DEAL OF TIME WITH MANY OWNERS. KEY TOPICS OF TWO OF MY LETTERS WERE AS FOLLOWS:

EVALUATION OF YOUR WHITBY 42 IS OFTEN A TOPIC OF INTEREST AND CONFUSION. TO COMPARE PRICES THROUGH GENERIC FACTORS IS A VALID WAY TO FAIRLY ASSESS THE POTENTIAL PRICE. AN EXAMPLE OF THIS OCCURS WHEN YOU COMPARE A PAIR OF BETTER THAN AVERAGE WHITBY'S EQUALLY EQUIPPED BUT ONE HAVING BEEN ONLY IN FRESH WATER (SWEET WATER) AND THE OTHER USED ENTIRELY IN SALT WATER. IF YOU ATTRIBUTE ONLY ONE OR TWO PERCENT PER YEAR ADVANTAGE TO THE FRESH WATER YACHT, YOU SOON HAVE A SEPARATION IN VALUE.

OLD INSTRUMENTATION AND EQUIPMENT OF THE 1980'S VINTAGE HAS A NEGLIGIBLE VALUE IN THE RESALE MARKET. A 3-5 YEAR OLD PIECE OF FINE ELECTRONICS HAS QUESTIONABLE VALUE IF REPLACEMENT PARTS OR FACTORY HELP IS NOT AVAILABLE

GENERATORS HAVE LOST SOME OF THEIR NEEDED STATUS DUE TO BATTERY AND INVERTER TECHNOLOGY, ALTERNATOR CAPABILITY AND NATURE ASSISTED CHARGERS. EXCEPT WHERE CREATURE COMFORTS LIKE AIR CONDITIONING ARE PRESENT THERE ARE SEVERAL ALTERNATIVES.

BOWSPRIT OR NOT HAS A SUBSTANTIAL COST FACTOR IF ONE TRIES TO RETRO-FIT. UPGRADING THE PRIMARIES TO LEWMAR 48'S OR BETTER STILL 55'S IS ONLY THE TIP OF THE REQUIRED FUNDS FOR THIS ENDEAVOUR. NEW FORESTAYS, SHROUDS, SAILS ETC. ARE ALSO CONCERNS EVEN BEFORE GETTING TO THE HARDWARE NECESSARY.

NEW HARDWARE & UTILITY EQUIPMENT SUCH AS SAILS, ANCHORS, CHAIN & RODE, STANDING RIGGING, ROLLER FURLING SYSTEMS, BATTERY AND ELECTRICAL UPGRADES ARE BUT JUST A FEW OF THE ITEMS I OFTEN SEE UNDERVALUED. ANY ADDITION TO THE YACHT THAT MAKES IT SAFER AND "MARINA INDEPENDENT" ARE MAJOR BONUSES TO THE BUYER OR OWNER WHO INTENDS TO MAKE THEIR DREAM YACHT A RETIREMENT HEAVEN. ON MANY OCCASIONS I HAVE EXPLAINED THE VIRTUES OF THE SADDLE TANKS THAT PROVIDE ABOVE PUMP FUEL FEED OT THE PRE FILTERS AND THEN TO THE ENGINE FILTER WITH MINIMUM WORK FOR THE FUEL PUMP, EXTOLLING THE APPEAL OF MULTIPLE SOURCE FUEL SELECTION, DUAL FILTRATION AND ALTERNATIVE PRE FILTER DETERMINATION (IN THE LATER MODELS). MANY TIMES THIS EQUIPMENT IS NOT FULLY CONSIDERED WHEN PURCHASE COMPARISONS ARE MADE BUT IS A BENEFIT FULLY ENJOYED WHEN THAT FUEL PROBLEM ARISES BY OWNERS WHO HAVE SUCH EQUIPMENT INSTALLED.

HORSEPOWER IS ANOTHER FACTOR THAT I FOCUS UPON WHEN I'M HELPING A FUTURE CUSTOMER LOOK AT THE GENERIC VALUES OF THE WHITBY. HORROR STORIES OF YACHTS THAT CANNOT POWER AWAY FROM IMPENDING DANGERS ARE ALL TOO FAMILIAR AND OFTEN COME TO US AS A LESSON IN SAFETY. THE WHITBY 42 WAS STANDARD WITH AN ENGINE THAT PROVIDED ABOUT 3 HP PER THOUSAND POUNDS AND THAT'S A LOT OF SAFETY. ALBEIT, SHE IS UP TO SOME VERY FINE SAILING AS CHRONICLED IN RICHARD HENDERSON'S BOOK "THE CHOICE YACHT," CHAPTER 26.

INCREASING RUDDER SIZE TO THAT SIMILAR IN SIZE TO TED BREWER'S ORIGINAL SIZE IS A CURRENT TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE. FOR THOSE WITH OLDER 42'S AN INSPECTION OF THE BRAND AND CAPABILITIES OF THE EXISTING INSTALLED HYDRAULICS AND THE INTEGRITY OF THE MOULDED KNEES & STRUTS TO SUPPORT THE EXTRA THRUST IS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN THE ALTERATION.

BUNG PLUG INSTALLATION IN THE AFT SUMP BY THE STUFFING BOX CREATES A REAL SOLUTION FOR CLEANING BILGES WHEN ON THE HARD OR ADDED PROTECTION THAT WINTER IN THE RAIN SNOW & ICE WITH THEIR MASTS IN

THIS TIME I'VE INCLUDED SOME FORT MYERS BUILT BREWER DESIGNS AS WELL AS MANY OF THE OWNERS I FAILED TO MEET IN THE 70'S.-SO--"HELLO". I SPENT MANY YEARS ASSOCIATED WITH THE HANSENS THROUGH BOATING FROM THE EARLY 7Os. FROM THE EARLY 80s' UNTIL CLOSING I SOLD MUCH OF THE NEW PRODUCT, PARTICULARLY THE 42'S. I"VE HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE TO MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH MANY OWNERS, SOME AS CLOSE FRIENDS AND OTHERS AS GOOD SAILING COMRADES. FOR THOSE WHO ASK I HAVE SET UP A DATA BASE OF INFORMATION AND ITEMS FOR SALE/EXCHANGE. ALSO I AM ACTIVE AS A BROKER IN CANADA AS WELL AS THE UNITED STATES & ELSEWHERE. I CURRENTLY HAVE TWO WHITBY 42'S ON LISTING. I HAVE A 1983 & '84 WHITBY, BOTH BUILT IN CANADA

A NOTE OF INTEREST TO THOSE WHO HAVE CINKEL SPARS. THESE WILL BE BOATS APPROACHING THE H.I.N. #200 AND THOSE IN THE 300's UP TO AT LEAST 321.......THE FORESTAY EYE HAS ON AT LEAST TWO DOCUMENTED OCCASIONS FAILED. IT IS FABRICATED BY COMBINING TWO STAINLESS FITTINGS OR PARTS THEREOF WITH A CENTRE CORE THAT APPEARS TO BE A LOWER GRADE STAINLESS ROD. ON CLOSE INSPECTION, THE CENTRE OF THE FITTING SHOULD YIELD SIGNS OF STAINLESS WELDING. IN BOTH CASES THE FITTING BROKE IN TWO; THE MOST RECENT DURING A FULL GALE NORTH OF NEW ZEALAND. IN NEITHER CASE WAS ANYONE HURT BUT I URGE YOU TO CHECK YOURS. SUPPLIERS OF REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE BEING ASSEMBLED AND I'LL FORWARD THAT INFO TO BERNIE BOYKIN TO BE INCLUDED IN THE NEXT ASSOC. N/L. IT INCLUDES MODIFICATIONS TO THE AFT SLIDING HATCH. THEIR POSSESSION DATE LOOMS IN THE VERY FORESEEABLE FUTURE. THE CENTRE FUEL TANK CONTINUES TO BE A SOURCE OF ANXIETY FOR A NUMBER OF OWNERS. I AM CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO RECOVER A RUPTURED TANK. IF ANY OF YOU HAVE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE CONCLUDE WITH A SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME, PLEASE SHARE!!

ROGER & PAULA HALL ARE LEAVING THEIR BUSINESS & HOME LIFE BEHIND IN TEXAS ON THEIR WHITBY "WHISKEY JULIETT", AND WILL EVENTUALLY MEET UP WITH HIS BROTHER DAVID & WIFE JAN ON "ADAGIO". DAVID, LIKE SO MANY OWNERS, IS A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE ON SOURCING & IMPROVED ENGINEERING. THEY HAVE DECIDED TO ADD A COMBINATION HARD DODGER AS OTHERS HAVE IN THE PAST AND A FEW MORE ARE CONSIDERING. IF ANY OF YOU WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE US HAVE PICTURES DRAWINGS &/OR SPECS THAT YOU COULD SHARE WITH OTHER OWNERS, I'D TRY TO DISSEMINATE THEM.

THE GOOD NEWS FOR OWNERS IS THE INCREASED ACTIVITY OF CONTACTS LOOKING TO BUY OR LIST YOUR "YACHT WITH EXPERIENCE" IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE MARKET CONTINUES TO BE FIRM AND UPWARD. FRESHWATER USED ONLY VESSELS CONTINUE TO BE AT A PREMIUM AND CLEAN, CARED-FOR-YACHTS ARE ALWAYS A DREAM TO FIND. ONE OF THE BROKERS MAILED MANY OWNERS HIS SALES ACTIVITY REVEALING HOW MUCH WAS PAID FOR VARIOUS VESSELS. ALL INDICATORS ARE THAT IF YOU ARE LOOKING AFTER YOURS, IT SHOULD PLEASE YOU WITH A GOOD RETURN OF YOUR INVESTMENT,. (THAT WAS "OF" NOT "ON", WE ARE PROBABLY SOME YEARS FROM A RETURN OF THE 60'S & 70'S BUYING FRENZY)..

RECENTLY WHILE ABOARD CASSAWAPPY lll H.I.N.57, A SELDOM DISCUSSED TOPIC ABOUT A HEAVY DIESEL ODOUR IN THE AFT HEAD CAME UP. FROM TIME TO TIME WHEN REFUELING THE PORT TANK, AN AROMA OF DIESEL WOULD MANIFEST ITSELF SOME TIME LATER. NOW IT TURNS OUT THAT IF THE FUEL FILLER PERSON (NOT TO ATTACH BLAME TO MATES OR OTHER FAMILY ) WAS A LITTLE SLOPPY AND SPILLED, IT WOULD RUN INTO THE DECK SCUPPER WHICH IS "TEE'D" INTO THE COCKPIT DRAIN. BELOW WHERE THE AFT HEAD SINK DRAIN ALSO JOINS. OF COURSE, DIESEL RISES AND SOME WOULD FIND ITS WAY INTO THE THROAT OF THE SINK DRAIN AND SIT THERE UNTIL THE WHITBY HEALED SUFFICIENTLY AS TO LET ALL THE CONTENTS DRAIN, BUT UNTIL THEN STAYED AT THE TOP AND PROVED THAT IT CAN "OUT AROMA" ALMOST EVERYTHING ON THE MARKET TO MAKE IT GO AWAY. THE REMEDY IS TO LEAD THE PORT SCUPPER ELSEWHERE, IN THIS CASE OVER TO THE STARBOARD SCUPPER THRU-HULL. ONE COULD RE-ROUTE THE AFT SINK DRAIN AS WELL LEAVING THE COCKPIT DRAIN ON ITS OWN.



IN THE NEXT SHARE-INFO-LETTERS I WANT TO CONVEY THOUGHTS ON "MARINA INDEPENDENCE" WHEN ON THE MOVE. HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR CRUISING/SAILING HOME TO REDUCE WHAT HAS BECOME THE #1 TRAVELING EXPENSE--ITEMS OF INTEREST TO ALL OF COURSE IS POWER SUSTENANCE..
