Today’s Market For Whitby 42’s
There is no question that we are in a buyer’s market today for Whitby 42’s-- just as we are for most other boat brands, real estate, and so on. However, that does not mean that it is easy street for buyers. With an average of 15 to 25 boats to choose from, which one is best for you? Do you go for the newest? The lowest priced? The best equipped? One with low mileage? How do you know which ones are in great shape and which not?
You really need a trustworthy, knowledgeable source of advice before you take the plunge.
Our advice is to first have a chat with Doug Stephenson. Doug is an active member of The Whitby-Brewer Sailboats Association and is the go-to source of knowledge about Whitby 42’s --here's why:
1. Knowledge-- Doug is the foremost authority on Whitby 42s. He was associated for many years with Whitby Boat Works. Doug continued with an active brokerage and has become familiar with a large number of the Whitby 42s. He has augmented his working knowledge of the Whitby 42 by spending an entire season living aboard the Whitby 42. He has traveled north and south in the Atlantic from north of 60 to South America with a couple of west to east trips behind him as well. He also enjoyed one and a half years of living-aboard and cruising the eastern Med on the Whitby 55.
Additionally he has returned a Whitby 42, Largo Bay from the Caribbean and undertook a complete refit of this vessel. It proved to be a great opportunity to update his knowledge about costs, values and technologies.
2. Reputation-- Doug Stephenson is a Broker with high standards of honesty and integrity. His clients, both buyers and sellers, and many fine Brokers, will attest to his excellent reputation. You can be comfortable with his advice, information and direction. Ask any Whitby 42 owner or past owner who has experience doing business with him.
3. Selection-- In addition to current listings, there are over 400 Whitby 42s, Brewer 12.8s and Brewer 44 owners, past and current in Doug’s database. They receive on-going newsletters and other information bi-annually. If Doug does not have the boat you are looking for currently listed, he will not try to steer you to the 'listing of the day'. Rather, he will pursue other sources or may, from discreet information, be able to alert you to an upcoming listing.
4. The Optimum Price-- In Doug's experience, most buyers are more concerned with paying the right price and less with paying the cheapest price. That is, a price that reflects the true value of their intended. Doug’s firm, Trawlers and Sailing Yachts Inc, keeps track of current selling prices coded by the condition of the vessel, the upgrades, age and where the Whitby 42 has been sailed. This reference data, along with Doug Stephenson's first-hand knowledge, assures that the true value is more accurately determined so that you will not overpay.
5. Service-- Ask any of Doug's past clients. He shares the total experience with them.
After the successful negotiation, he will help with arrange the hull and hardware survey, rigging inspection, sail inspection and the necessary oil analysis for the transmission and crankcase.
At closing, he will be there to harmonize the outcome of the sea trial and to assure that all the systems are running as contractually promised. Also he will undertake a full review of the inventory as specified in the Agreement to Purchase.
After closing, Douglas is available to help organize transport, repairs or other required yard services as and if required. This is all part of his commitment to buyers on the basis of a modest fee and expenses. Most customers elect to use this time to become familiar with the yacht, her equipment and her systems. Doug can bring an exciting and quick understanding of the total capability of this utility-rich yacht. The new owner can learn the value of the on-board systems that will enhance your enjoyment of this offshore, liveaboard cruiser.
